The “Q…”
I don’t make a secret of my disdain for social media. I deleted my Twitter for obvious reasons, and only have an Instagram to watch funny animal reels. Facebook should in theory be great, and it even was for a minute; I loved being able to keep up with friends near and far. But very quickly it changed and the Follow Us On Facebook! icon showed up everywhere.
The problem with asking people to follow you on Facebook is, you’re promoting Facebook, not whatever you think you’re promoting. I’m not telling you to delete your Facebook. I do still like it for keeping up with friends in far away places, but Facebook keeps finding new and exciting ways to make that harder and harder to do, and it will continue to show you what it wants you to see instead.
A few weeks ago, my friend Kurt (hi Kurt!) asked a question on Facebook which I set aside for a chance to engage with folks more here:
What is the procedure for traditional descendants that are not in the bloodline? Especially for non-Japanese musicians? Is there one?
It’s a great question, one worth its own brogpost, even.
So here goes! I’d love to answer your questions! To facilitate this, I have enabled comments below. Questions about music, music business, Japan, Japanese music, my weird family, whatever — it’s all fair game.
Anyone who’s been to a workshop of mine knows how much I love questions. Mostly because I can get real tired of the sound of my own voice, but also because it’s the best way to see where there may be unaddressed areas of confusion. So please, fire away and I’ll do my best to elucidate without being pedantic. I takes a Q to make an A!
More anon,
Hanz
