Music, Live and in Person

I realize I have been somewhat remiss in my brog contributions of late. The good news is, this has been a function of actually playing music rather than thinking about playing music. I’m delighted to have some opportunities to share both shakuhachi music, and even getting back to playing some Irish music (more on that here).

My first love in Japanese music was sankyoku; the chamber music consisting of koto, shamisen, and shakuhachi. I’m thrilled to have an opportunity to play alongside an incredibly talented musician, Yamaji Miho for a selection of pieces. We will also have a chance to talk a bit about the history of our instruments, and of this music, and hopefully answer your questions, should any arise.

In addition to playing ensemble, both Ms. Yamaji and I will play solos; the pieces we have selected to play together are Chidori no Kyoku (which I wrote about here) and Kuro Kami, which translates to “Black Hair,” a song of unrequited love. One of the verses says:

Not knowing the heart
Of a simple girl
The voice of a temple bell
Sounds into the quiet night
Awakening from an empty dream
In the morning
How lovely, sweet
And helpless is my longing
Before I know it
The silver snow has piled up

More anon,
Hanz
